Here comes the State Fair!

Yay! Our homeschool tickets have arrived and I was surprised to see that student tickets are now usable any day of the week, Monday through Friday.  I love the State Fair, especially when we get in for free and can go during the day and beat the crowds.  Our favorite day to go is on Thursday because many of the vendors offer food discounts or sell mini-versions and seniors get in for free so the grandparents can join us.  If you missed out on your free homeschool tickets or want to know additional discount opportunities the link below will help!

Also, did you know the State Fair has curriculum for teachers to use for grades K-12 and covers a variety of interests and topics?  If you would like to make your visit more educational, you can find the lesson here…

Calling all student scientists!

NASA needs your help! They are looking for students and citizen scientists to help gather information for the upcoming total solar eclipse on August 21st. There’s an app you download that will take you through the steps. What a great way to teach hands on science!  Check out this link for more information!

State Fair Homeschool Tickets

Hi everyone!  It’s that time of year to submit your requests for your FREE homeschool tickets to the State Fair in the fall.  Words of advice…follow the directions exactly, do it before the deadline, and just know they won’t come in the mail until right before the Fair starts.  In the past, homeschool days have been on Thursdays (which has usually been the half-price food days too) and your teacher ticket is good anytime.  🙂

2017 Home School Ticket Request Guidelines

***Please Note:  The deadline date for making your request has moved to the middle of May****

All requests must be made in writing. No requests made by phone or e-mail will be accepted.

You can submit a request anytime between March 1, 2017 and May 12, 2017.

The program is for K thru 12th grade. To be eligible, Kindergarteners must be 5 by September 29, 2017. We do not have a ticket program for children younger than Kindergarten/age 5.

The program is for families living in Texas within a 100 mile radius of the Fairgrounds.  Each family must submit individually to avoid duplicate requests.  We do not accept requests from home school groups or associations.

Your request letter should include your name, mailing address, email address and phone number(s). The letter should be computer printed or neatly hand written for clarity. Including an email address and daytime phone number is necessary for us to contact you in the event you neglect to include all required information.

Include BOTH the ages and grade levels of each student as they will be when the Fair opens on September 29th, 2017. Name of student is not necessary. Requests without this information will be returned unfilled.

We can send one teacher ticket per family. If you would like a teacher ticket, please include that request in your letter. There is no such thing as a principal ticket.

Include a business size (#10– measures 4 1/8” X 9 ½”) envelope with one first class stamp ($0.49 postage). Please DO NOT address the envelope in any way as we will print address labels. The envelope must be business size because of the length of the tickets.

Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center Homeschool Days

The Audubon is hosting homeschool days on March 22, April 25, or May 12 from 10am-1:30pm.  These educational days are geared toward homeschool groups and families as well as smaller schools (such as charter and private schools) that are unable to meet our minimum requirement of 25 students for field trips.

This is an environmental field trip focused on the natural world and features a guided nature hike, special activities and an opportunity to learn with others in the great outdoors. Students will experience hands-on exploration and learning in nature guided by dedicated educators.

Please arrive 15-20 minutes early to allow for time to check-in.

A lunch break is provided at our picnic tables in Nature Play. Please pack a lunch and dress for the outdoors. In the case of inclement weather, lunch and activities will be moved indoors.

Kids ages 3 and up are $10 each. Adults and children ages 2 and under are free.

Prepayment required at least 5 days before program date.

Texas Tulip Farm is now open

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to share that the Texas Tulip farm is now open.  We went last year on a Thursday and had such a great experience.  It wasn’t busy and we really got to take our time looking at all the different tulip varieties and then we got to cut and create a beautiful bouquet.  Oh, and what better place than to also take great pics of the kiddos.  We were there for about an hour and half total.  We brought our own cutters but they provide a basket. At the end they wrap your flowers for the trip to home.  Now I heard the place is crazy on the weekends, so I would recommend trying this for a weekday trip.  It would also be great to pack a lunch!

More hands-on classes!

I love learning outdoors.  Mostly because it doesn’t feel like school and I typically get the least amount of resistance.  If you have never had the chance to visit Bob Jones Nature Center it is definitely worth the trip.  I love this hidden gem in Southlake and it’s a great way to learn about the environment and geography in our area.  Aside from the great trails and regular activities, the offer homeschool classes for students 6-16.  Their classes work in 16 week increments for a few hours once a week.  They start August 24th so go take a look!
